Taking partial profits on gold trades

How to use multiple take-profit targets on gold: closing part of a trade at TP1, moving the stop to entry, and the maths behind it.

Signals with two or three targets let you bank profit in stages. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a strategy less stressful without changing the entries.

A common plan

Say you buy 0.10 lots at 4,118.50, stop 4,109.00, TP1 4,128.50, TP2 4,138.50.

  1. At TP1 (+100 pips), close half: +$50. Move the stop on the rest to entry.
  2. At TP2 (+200 pips), close the remainder: +$100.

Total: +$150. If price had turned after TP1 and come back to entry, you’d still have +$50 instead of a loss.

The trade-off

Taking profit early lowers the average win compared with holding everything to TP2, but it raises the share of trades that end positive and shortens losing streaks. Many traders find they follow their plan better with partials, which matters more than the theoretical maximum.

Variations

  • Thirds: a third at each of TP1, TP2 and TP3.
  • Trailing: after TP1, trail the stop behind recent swing lows instead of fixing it at entry.
  • All at TP1: simplest, highest win rate, smallest wins.

Whatever you choose, decide before you enter. The risk calculator shows the risk and reward for each target.
