Scalping gold: what it takes
What scalping XAUUSD involves, the best hours, how spreads eat into small targets, and the habits scalpers need to survive.
Scalping means taking many short trades, held for minutes, aiming for small moves: often 30 to 100 pips ($3 to $10) on gold.
Why gold attracts scalpers
Gold moves a lot, trades almost around the clock, and has deep liquidity during London and New York. A $5 move in ten minutes is ordinary.
The cost problem
Costs hit scalpers hardest. A 3-pip spread on a 40-pip target is 7.5% of every winner, before commission. Scalpers need tight spreads, which means raw-spread accounts and trading only in the most liquid hours. See gold trading costs.
Best hours
The London open and the London–New York overlap. Avoid the rollover, the Asian lull and the minutes around major data unless you’re deliberately trading the release. The session clock shows what’s open.
Habits that matter
- Hard stops on every trade. One unprotected scalp can erase a day of profits.
- A daily loss limit. Scalping invites revenge trading.
- Fewer, better trades. The best scalpers skip most setups.
- Fast execution. Signals for scalps lose value by the minute; this is where instant alerts matter most.
