Where to place a stop loss on gold
How to place stop losses on XAUUSD beyond structure, allowing for spread and volatility, and the mistakes that get gold traders stopped out.
A stop loss belongs where the trade idea is proven wrong, not at a round number of dollars you’re comfortable losing. The lot size takes care of the money.
Put it beyond structure
- For a buy, below the most recent swing low or the support level the trade relies on.
- For a sell, above the most recent swing high or resistance.
- Add a buffer, because gold often pokes just past obvious levels before turning.
Allow for gold’s volatility
Gold routinely moves $3 to $5 in minutes during active hours. A stop only $2 away (20 pips) will be hit by ordinary noise. Many traders measure volatility with the Average True Range (ATR) and keep stops at least 1 to 1.5 times the ATR of their timeframe.
Remember the spread
Your stop on a buy triggers on the bid price. When spreads widen, at the rollover or around news, a stop sitting close to price can be hit without the chart appearing to touch it.
Common mistakes
- Stops at round numbers like 4,100.00, where everyone’s stops sit and price loves to sweep.
- Moving the stop further away when price approaches it. That turns a planned loss into an unplanned one.
- No stop “because I’m watching it”. Gold can move $20 while you look away.
- Tight stops through major news. Either widen and reduce size, or stay out.
With signals
Every Gold Signals Daily signal comes with its stop already placed by the trader. Use it as given and size the position to match. If it feels too wide for your account, trade smaller, or skip the trade.
